Seagate says that the reduction in the warranty period isn't because of a lack of faith in their own products, but is to make the warranty more in line with the rest of the hard drive manufacturers' warranty periods. Seagate points out that owners of these drives who purchased before Januwill get the full five-year warranty that is currently offered. Some drives that currently have a five-year warranty that will be rescued to only three years on January 3 will include the Barracuda 7200, DiamondMax, Momentus 7200, Momentus 5400, Pipeline HD, Pipeline HD Pro, DB35, and the LD25 5400. One of the big selling points of Seagate drives over the competition for many consumers was the longer warranty. Seagate has announced that starting in January 2009, it will reduce the warranty period on some of its bare hard drives to three years.
